Deacons of the Coptic Diocese

St. Timon

St. Timon was one of the seven deacons chosen by the apostles in the early Christian church. He was selected along with Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, and Parmenas to serve the growing Christian community in Jerusalem.

The Acts of the Apostles tells us: “Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, ‘It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.’” (Acts 6:1-3)

St. Timon was chosen as one of these seven men, demonstrating that he was recognized by the early Christian community as a person of exceptional character, filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom. These seven deacons were ordained by the apostles through prayer and the laying on of hands.

After his ordination as a deacon, St. Timon served faithfully in the early church, helping to ensure that the needs of all believers were met, particularly the care of widows and the distribution of food to the needy.

According to tradition, St. Timon later became a bishop and spread the Gospel message, serving God’s people with dedication and love until his peaceful departure.

His prayers be with us and Glory be to Our God, forever. Amen.
